Greetings to all and prayers that
you and yours are well. As we discovered once again at the gathering Thursday
evening, there is much to pray about. Many were lifted up with the mention of
various illnesses and problems. Answers to prayer were revealed, and praises
and joys were many. I thank you very kindly for praying for me. It is a great
comfort especially now with so much happening.
The next four weeks are going to be
extremely busy. There is a Kairos event at Ross Correctional Institute February
1-4, a Men’s Walk at Trinity February 8-11, and a Boys Chrysalis Flight in
My response to the question “where
are all the people?” is, “I don’t know”. The numbers at the gathering last
Thursday were small. Everyone there could have sat in the same front section in
the first eight rows. If ten percent of those who have been on a GSV walk would
come to every gathering there would be hundreds there. My friends, you get no
judgment or rebuke from me because I am no one special. Perhaps you were sick,
out of town, or had a commitment you just couldn’t miss. I understand all these
things. But I want to tell you. I miss seeing your face and hugging your neck.
I miss hearing how the Lord has blessed your life. I want to sing with you,
praise with you, and serve with you. I am one with you and one of you and it’s
because of Him that I keep coming to serve.
I will be praying for you and
praying that servants will show up in great numbers. The Lord is good and
greatly to be praised.

Something to Lean On
When I was a boy my family visited the farm of our
young pastor, Ford Hoff, just outside of West Union, Ohio. While we were there
Dad would do light repairs on the old farm house and we would all get out of
the city for the weekend. Sometimes we would take these opportunities to go on
long hikes. You couldn’t do much of that in the city then. And if we were to go
on a hike, we had to have walking sticks.
In Psalm 23:4 the psalmist says “your rod and your
staff, they comfort me.” The promises of God are like a needed staff
for the uphill climbs of life. We might stumble and fall without the aid of
divine assistance required for such a climb.
Some of you have loved ones overseas serving in the
military in
For others of us, our line of work may require us to
move from time to time if we plan to keep our jobs (I’m with you, there), and it
may happen at a time when our families have other plans (of staying!) Being
forced to leave the familiar and go to a place that is new, different and
perhaps lonely can create separation
anxiety.
So got your staff in hand? Are you ready to hike? Don’t go unprepared because we don’t know how
long we will be on the journey or when it will end. But by taking the staff,
the word of God, in your heart and mind, you will be able to face those
challenges and obstacles head on in the strength of the Lord. For “In quietness
and trust is your strength.” Isaiah
30:15 “For I know the plans I have for
you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. The promises
of God are true and worthy of our trust. All the great heroes of the Bible were
given orders to make the climb and succeeded in doing so. So can you!

Neil Foster

Why Go to Gatherings?
Our gatherings follow a familiar
format: worship music, community “business”, praises and prayers, special
music, Fourth Day speaker, special music, short message from the spiritual
director, communion, closing and fellowship. Wow! I guess we pack a lot into a
short period of time.
We start out with worship music that
lifts us up out of our day to day routine and turns our hearts to God. Then we
catch up on what’s going on in the community. Next we take a moment to thank
God for the things He has done for individuals in the community and their loved
ones.
Then we solemnly go to the Lord in
prayer. There’s a special feeling at this time as the Holy Spirit moves
throughout the sanctuary, prompting members to pour their hearts out by simply
naming the persons on their hearts. Jesus promised that when two or more are
gathered together in His name, He will be there. I think most will agree that
our gathering prayer times are holy moments.
Following prayer, we are blessed by
an ordinary member of the community who shares his or her walk in faith since
the Walk to Emmaus. And it is a blessing! You come away feeling like you know
and love the speaker more than you did before.
Then there’s the special music. I
don’t know about you, but music cuts right through to my soul. Sometimes I can
be unaffected by a soulfully delivered sermon, but a simple song can melt away
all the defenses I’ve built, all the worldly junk that I’ve allowed to isolate
me from God. Then our spiritual director draws the whole experience together
and gives words to encourage us to go out and live for Jesus. We always end by
commemorating the Lord’s sacrifice by taking communion—always a renewing
experience.
Wow! How could you cap all of that
off? Well you know—it’s Emmaus, and when Emmaus meets, Emmaus eats! We gather
in the fellowship hall and share food and, more importantly, fellowship. It’s
time to meet and greet new members of the community and to catch up with old
friends.
Do you have to bring a covered dish
to take part? No! Don’t let your inability or lack of time stop you from coming
and enjoying this time together. If you can, bring something you bought or
cooked, or drop a dollar or two in the basket, but you don’t have to do any of
that. Just come and be part of the GSVE community. The Spirit of God will be
there. Shouldn’t you?
Gatherings, as always, are the third
Thursday of each month at 7 PM at

So You Want to Be a Sponsor?
Great! That’s awesome! We commend
you—But . . .
But, we want you to be aware that
there are some serious responsibilities attached. You probably already know
that you are responsible for getting your pilgrim to and from the walk and
getting agape letters from his or her friends and family. But have you been
praying for your pilgrim, the team, and the success of the walk? Have you
signed up for the prayer vigil, housekeeping crew and/or kitchen crew? Did you
get a Fourth Day book for your pilgrim? Have you discussed the weekend with
your pilgrim? Are you prepared to step in and help shoulder your pilgrims’
duties at home while he or she is on the walk? Will you be at Candlelight and
Closing?
After the walk will you attend the
mini-gathering with your pilgrim? Will you invite your pilgrim to work
side-by-side with you on the next walk? Will you help him or her find a share
group?
That’s a long list of questions, and
they aren’t meant to discourage you. Rather, they are meant to encourage you to
be the best sponsor you can be. Remember, prayer is the foundation of good
sponsorship. You should pray about who you should sponsor, and once your
pilgrim commits to a walk, you should pray even more, even harder, for this
special moment in his or her life.
When your pilgrim confirms he or she
will fill a spot on a walk you will receive a packet that details the sponsor’s
responsibilities. I urge you to go through the packet carefully and do everything
you can to make the Walk to Emmaus a great experience for your pilgrims—it’s an
act of love, in the name of Christ.
