Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus Newsletter                                               November 2004

From our ChairpersonÉ

I am involved in a Bible Study with 10 wonderful ÒsistersÓ. The study is entitled, ÒKnowing God:  Making God the Main Thing in My Life.Ó  The ironic thing about this study is that we all joined the group expecting to learn how to find balance in our lives by studying several women in the Bible, but the wrong books were ordered and given to us!  None of us wanted to admit that what we were reading had nothing to do with what were expecting to read and it was hilarious as we all discovered that we had the wrong book.  A decision had to be made:  did we continue with the books we had in our possession or did we get the books we expected and start again?  After discussing our feelings about what we had studied, our leader made an interesting observation:  we were all complaining that this topic was too deep, that we didnÕt want to be this serious – sounds like we need this study before we could find balance in our lives!  Huh?  God needed to be the main thing in our lives – God needs to be real, and our relationship with God needs to be authentic.  So, the Finding Balance study will begin in January!

One of the daily study topics related to Philippians 4:4 – ÒAlways be full of joy in the Lord, I say it again – rejoice!Ó  I have been thinking about this a lot during this season.  Our pastor has been doing a series of sermons on blessings and he has emphasized the song, ÒCount Your BlessingsÓ many times.  I often contemplate why, at gatherings and other prayer meetings, that when we ask for joys the room is fairly quiet; and when we ask for concerns, there are so many.  Why are we so hesitant to share our joys?  Kimberly Dunnam Reisman reflects on this ÒsecretÓ in the study book:

ÒChristians ought to be the most joyful people on the planet.  For some reason, however, weÕre not – or at least we donÕt appear to be.  Rather than joy being our best-known attribute, it is our best-kept secret. In coming to know God, we come to know the deep, abiding joy of being in relationship with a God who accepts us as we are and pledges never to abandon us.  The by-product of making the God the main thing in our lives is the overflowing joy of being received even when we are not worthy, of being forgiven and restored to a life buoyed by the redemptive, healing, recreating love of God.Ó

In this Thanksgiving season, focus on the blessings and joy God has given you.  Oh, I know there are still many issues of concern; and IÕm not asking you to overlook them, but truly focus on the good things God has done.  Focus on the celebration of life, the happiness of being, the joy of a God who loves you for you and a God who will never leave you.

A Word From The Spiritual DirectorÉ

 Open Our Eyes

There is a little book in my house that states in one sectionÓ Look at everything as though you were looking at it for the first time or the last time. Then your time will be full of gloryÓ. When I first read this I thought to myselfÓ What a moving idea! If one has the exuberance of all those ÔfirstsÕ life would be exciting and it would be an enthusiastic experienceÓ. But the more I thought about it the less I agreed with the idea.

When pilgrims take that precious Walk to Emmaus many do get the sensation of   seeing some things they already knew as if it were the first time and it is exhilarating. But then there is also a wonderful feeling of familiarity. Maybe it is hearing a song that has always comforted or inspired you. Maybe it is the experience of Communion that has bound the Body of Believers together down through the Ages.

I am reminded once again of Psalm 100:3 ÒKnow ye that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pastureÓ. God knows exactly what we need whether it is a fresh look at an old truth or the comfort and security of familiar affirmation.

I suggest that we try to see things as God puts them before our hearts and minds. He knows when we need a wake up call and need to see things anew; he also knows when we need familiar affirmation. May our eyes be truly open to his goodness and wisdom.

In His Service,

Phil Howard

Mark Your Calendars – Regional Training Session

Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus annually signs a covenant with the Upper Room in Nashville, Tennessee (the governing board of Emmaus).  One of the items in the covenant that we are to uphold is to conduct a regional training session every three years in this community.  We have scheduled a regional training session for Saturday, May 21st, 2005 at Trinity Church.  This session will be an all-day event, complete with a time of praise, Holy Communion, lunch, and lots of information regarding the Emmaus Movement.  Plan now to attend.  Make it a reunion time with your tablemates.  Make it a share group activity.  Make it a renewal time for you.  More information will be coming in future newsletters and mailings.
