A WORD FROM OUR CHAIR...........

WHO WILL YOU TELL?

Luke 24:35  Then the two followers told what had happened on the road and how they recognized Jesus when he divided the bread.

That’s the last verse of the scriptures used to model the Walk to Emmaus weekend.  The last thing the two who walked on the road with Jesus did was to tell of their experience.  Who will you tell after you experience Christ’s love on the Walk to Emmaus?  Who do you know that could benefit from this experience?  Why haven’t you asked them yet?  Have you been praying for them?  Have you talked to them about your experience?  Have you explained what goes on during a weekend?  Have you invited them to a gathering so they can see a little bit of the excitement?  Have you prayed for them?  Have you asked them to commit to a weekend by filling out and returning the registration form?  Are you praying for them?

There is an entire chapter in “The Manual” (The Upper Room Handbook on Emmaus, Second Edition[a]) devoted to Sponsorship.  Some of the highlights are summarized here:

Sponsorship is vital to the health of this community and the Emmaus Movement worldwide.  Without sponsors, we will have no walks; and, more importantly, we will be denying our discipleship by ignoring Christ’s plea to develop leaders who will share the faith with everyone they come in contact with.  God reaches out to people through people.  We need to be the ones to tell others of this Emmaus experience because we want others to experience God’s love and the community’s unconditional love.

Sponsorship is sometimes taken for granted, but it is actually the most important Fourth Day job there is.  The quality of sponsorship influences the pilgrim, the health of the Emmaus Movement, and the churches affected by the movement.  Sponsorship is the first act of agape before a Walk ever begins.  Good sponsorship encircles the whole weekend with sacrificial love on behalf of each pilgrim.  Good sponsorship is the foundation for a healthy, effective Emmaus movement that is fulfilling its true purpose:  the development of Christian leaders and the renewal of the church in ministry.

If you have read your ”Day Four, The Pilgrim’s Continued Journey”[b] book that your sponsor should have given you, you would have read the following:  “The strength of any Emmaus Community is a direct result of that community’s recruiting practices.  If the community is committed of recruiting strong church leaders for the purpose of strengthening the local church, then the community will be a strong vital force in the renewal movement.”  Who will you tell?

Quoting from the handbook:  “The aim of a sponsor should not be to ‘get all my friends to go,’ to fill up the three-day event, to fix people’s problems, or to reproduce one’s own religious experience in others.  Rather, the aim of the sponsor is to bring spiritual revitalization to Christians, who, in turn, will bring new life and vision to the work of the church in the congregation, home, workplace, and community.  The aim of sponsorship is to build up the body of Christ.”  Who are you praying for?

Here’s something to ponder from your walk.  Remember the questions posed on Thursday evening and again on Sunday evening?  What has this weekend meant to me and what am I going to do about it?  What are you going to do about it?  Do you realize that if each person from each walk sponsored one person, that we would never have to struggle to fill a walk?  Who are you going to pray for?  Who are you going to tell?

Please, continue to pray for the Greater Scioto Valley Emmaus Community and the people who we know will grow from this experience.

DeColores!

Diana Hall
